The Forgotten War: The Siege of the Grey Pass

This account comes from the Arena Archive. It tells of the years before the crown and the sword, when his name was “Ordon” and he still owned it.

1. The Kingdom on the Edge

The kingdom of “Kern” was small, tucked into a narrow valley between two mountain ranges, and the only way in was a single pass they called “the Grey Pass”: about three miles long, and no wider than ten men standing shoulder to shoulder. Ordon spent his years in that pass as captain of the border guard, with three hundred and forty fighters under him.

He carried a double axe inherited from his father, and on his chest a small crossbow for close shots. His right arm bore a white bandage he had not taken off since a wound in his first year, and another was wrapped around his left leg, so his men knew him by his bandages before they knew his face.

2. The Dust Hosts

The enemy came from the south on a windless morning: six thousand fighters led by a woman named “Salva.” People called them “the Dust Hosts,” because their march raised a grey cloud that could be seen two days away. They asked for no gold and no prisoners. They wanted only the pass, because whoever holds it holds the road beyond the mountains.

3. The First Year: Stones and Oil

Ordon threw back the first assaults with whatever he had: stones rolled down from both ridges, oil boiled in cauldrons on the rocks, and a barricade of logs across the neck of the pass. Thirteen assaults broke against it that year. The guard lost forty men; the Dust Hosts lost more than a thousand.

4. The Second Year: Hunger

Salva understood that the pass could not be taken by the sword, so she cut the road to the villages behind it and burned the granaries. By winter the guard was eating its horses. When spring ended, only a hundred and twelve were left, and some of them were too wounded to carry a weapon.

5. The Night of Betrayal

On the seventh night of snow in the third year, his lieutenant “Sern” opened the eastern gate of the pass in exchange for a promise that his family would live. Ordon ran to the gate alone and held the breach with his own body for two full hours, until the blade of his first axe snapped, an arrow took his left eye, and the skin of his arms split from cold and wounds.

He did not stab Sern when he caught him. He told him: “You didn’t betray me. You betrayed the ones who died here.” Then he set him as a sentry at the gate and kept him there until dawn.

6. The Offer

At dawn only seventy-one fighters remained, and a masked man who cast no shadow appeared on the rock. He did not give his name. He offered Ordon a small red crown and a broad golden sword with a green gem in its hilt, and said: “An arena whose gates never close, a victory that never ends, and a single price.”

Ordon asked what the price was. The masked man said: “Your name, piece by piece, with every fight.” Then he added the one thing that made him accept: the gem would keep the souls of his surviving men, so they would not die. Ordon agreed, because he could not bear to leave a single one of them beneath the snow.

7. The Inscription and the Oath

When he touched the sword, two lines of runes appeared on the blade: the first a blood oath binding him to the arena, the second its price, that whoever raises the blade loses his name. When he set the crown on his head, the green eye settled into his face in place of the one he had lost, and through it the gem began calling to the souls of the gladiators.

8. The Last Battle of the Pass

When the Dust Hosts stormed the pass, believing it had fallen, they found men without shadows who fought without tiring. The fighting lasted until noon and ended in a silence the mountains had never known: not one survivor from Salva’s army, and no grave for the guard. The Grey Pass became his first arena, and his men its first ghosts.

9. After the Victory

The kingdom of Kern fell years later, and no one was left to remember it or its war. With every new fight in the arena, Ordon lost one letter of his name, until all that remained was his title: Fight King.

And when the sword broke in the hands of a boy who knew nothing of this war, the first thing to return to Ordon was not victory, but the echo of his own name, calling down an empty pass.
